What do I need to be a Calgary Public Library volunteer?
The Calgary Public Library offers a wide spectrum of volunteer programs and each position requires different skills and availability. For further information please read the detailed description for each of our programs.
A police check will be conducted for all successful adult applicants.
How long does it take to be placed?
We receive a large number of volunteer applications throughout the year – some periods more than others (i.e. summer holidays). Thus, it takes time for our coordinators to get through them all. That being said, volunteer programs run at different times during the year:
- Fall, Winter, and Summer programs
- Year-round programs
If a position is not available at the time of application, we will keep your application on file for one year in case a future opportunity arises.
How can I improve my chances of being placed as a Calgary Public Library volunteer?
The best thing you can do to enhance your chance of being placed is to be flexible with your choice of Library location. Indicate which programs, libraries, and time of the day you are available. If you aren't sure which Library is closest to your house, visit our map of Branches & Hours.
What is the time commitment?
The volunteer programs at Calgary Public Library have varying time commitments. Programs such as ESL Conversation Club and Reading Buddies run seasonally, three times (Fall, Winter, and Summer) a year for seven to eight weeks. Other programs, like Learning Advantage and TD Read With Me, are year-long commitments. We also offer one-time programs such as Read Letter Day.
How do I know which programs are looking for volunteers?
You can find out which programs are looking for volunteers from our Current Opportunities section of the website. We do however, accept applications throughout the year for all volunteer programs.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Youth volunteers must be in Grades 7 through 12 (typically ages 12 to 18). Adult volunteers are 18 or older.
Can we volunteer as a group?
Adult volunteers can volunteer as a group through the Read Letter Day program. In this program, a group of adults share books with children for an afternoon in order to promote learning and literacy. Unfortunately, there currently is no opportunity for youth to volunteer as a group. Check out Volunteer Calgary for other youth opportunities.
