Overview

The TD Read With Me program matches adult volunteers with young struggling readers in Grades 1 - 6. Volunteers support children one-on-one to discover the magic of reading and develop a lifelong reading habit. Various literacy based games and fun books are promoted to ecourage reading.


Goals

To enhance reading level skills and interest in reading for young readers

To instill confidence and genuine desire for lifelong learning

To provide exposure to a fun creative learning environment

To foster independent learning skills

To introduce family/caregivers to the Library

To increase awareness and use of library resources, services and programs


Length

Throughout the Year

1.0 hour a week


Qualifications

Fluent in English

Strong facilitation skills

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Patient and reliable

Ability to help children of diverse backgrounds and skill levels

Attend a five hour training session


Responsibilities

Help participants to enhance their reading skills

Commit to participate in the program for a minimum of one year

Contact the participant if you are unable to attend a scheduled session

Respect confidentiality


Training

A 5.5 hour training session covering program content, volunteer responsibilities, and the role of volunteers at Calgary Public Library
