Reading Buddies (Youth Opportunity Grades 7-12)
Overview
Bring stories to life for students in Grades 1 to 3!
Reading Buddies encourage children to read, offer a supportive environment to develop strong literacy skills, and most importantly, make reading fun!
Program Goals
Reading Buddies is designed:
- To provide a safe and friendly environment for young students to experience the magic of reading
- To enhance the reading interest of struggling readers
- To provide a fun library experience
- To provide an opportunity for youth volunteers to develop mentoring skills
- To increase awareness and use of library resources, services and programs
Length of the program
- 1.5 hour sessions for 8 weeks in the Fall/Winter
- 1.5 hour sessions over 5 consecutive days (Monday-Friday) in the Summer
Volunteer Qualification
- Volunteers will be junior or high school students (grade 7 – grade 12)
- Volunteers will be reliable, have a positive attitude, and good literacy level
- Enjoy working with children
- Volunteers will be good role models
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Attend volunteer orientation session
- Be a good role model for their buddy
- Follow the guidelines set out by the program coordinators
- Ensure that the participants have an enjoyable learning experience
