Spanish Conversation Club
Overview
Spanish Conversation Club is designed to help customers who are learning Spanish to practice speaking and listening skills in a comfortable and informal environment. Through the use of small group and paired discussions, volunteers will discuss topics such as travel, food and shopping.
Program Goals
Spanish Conversation Club is designed:
- To provide a comfortable and safe environment to practice speaking and listening in Spanish
- To foster independent learning skills
- To provide an enjoyable social setting
- To increase awareness and use of library resources, services and programs
Length of Program
- 1.5 hours a week for 8 week sessions in Fall/Winter
- 1.5 hours a week for 7 week sessions in Summer
Volunteer Qualifications
- Fluent in Spanish
- Strong facilitation skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Respect and understanding of diversity
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Help participants to learn and practice Spanish
- Commit to participate in the program for a minimum of one year
- Contact library staff if unable to attend a scheduled session
- Respect confidentiality
Training
- Volunteer coaches participate in a training workshop covering relevant topics, including an introduction to Calgary Public Library, program goals and organization, characteristics of adult learners, and review of modules.
- Branch Orientation conducted by the branch contact staff person will be offered prior to the start of the program
