The 71st Golden Globes

by Moe - 0 Comment(s)

The Golden Globe Awards kick off the start of the awards season and will again be hosted by funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They air on January 12th, 2014.

A lot of the theatrical films chosen are actually just hitting the theatres as I write but rest assured that our ace Selectors will be ordering such titles as 12 Years A Slave, Captain Phillips, American Hustle and Wolf of Wall Street.

Most of the television series nominated are items that we do carry, such as: Nurse Jackie, Veep, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, House of Cards, Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Parks and Rec to name a few. Now many of these have been on television for years but if they are still being nominated that speaks of their consistent quality over the ensuing years.

Start paying attention because before you know it it will be time to start your Oscar Pool!

The 65th Emmys just aired this past Sunday and you can follow this link to see who won what. A few surprises, but not many. Something that might surprise you is just how many of these series and specials CPL carries. When it comes to television, we've got you covered.

Here are just a few of the nominees and winners we carry: Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, Homeland, Game of Thrones, MadMen, Big Bang Theory, The Newsroom, The Big C, Boardwalk Empire, The Hour, The Good Wife. This is by no means all that we have so if you want to see if we carry your own fave search the show's title in our catalogue. To help narrow your search add DVD to the show's name, as in Boardwalk Empire DVD.

So much to watch, so little time!

64th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards

by Moe - 0 Comment(s)

It's that time of year again! Set your devices on Sunday Sept 23rd to watch the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' impressive gala. And you know what's equally impressive? How many of these TV shows CPL carries in DVD. Here are some of this year's contenders, with links to year one of each of the series. A catalogue search by title will show you all the years that we have in the system. Many of the new season are already either in or on order and available to place holds on.

DRAMA

"Boardwalk Empire" (HBO)
"Breaking Bad" (AMC)
"Downton Abbey" (PBS)
"Game of Thrones" (HBO)
"Homeland" (Showtime)
"Mad Men" (AMC)

COMEDY

"The Big Bang Theory" (CBS)
"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (HBO)
"Modern Family" (ABC)
"30 Rock" (NBC)

MINISERIES OR TV MOVIE

"Hatfields & McCoys" (History)
"Luther" (BBC America)
"Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia" (PBS)

Some prognostications on my part: I would love to see Breaking Bad dethrone Mad Man and this could be the year. Mad Men was a yawn (Zu Bisou and Jared Harris not withstanding) whereas BB was equal parts compelling, twisted and gut-wrenching. However Homeland could be the breakout new drama—I couldn't wait to get through each episode and then was so upset when I watched the entire first year in just two sittings and realized I had to wait for season two. Game of Thrones is a strong contender—great sets, huge cast, big budget and fine acting. Boardwalk Empire—when is Steve Buscemi NOT good? And on a more genteel note, Downton Abbey is not to be ignored.

So much for prognostications—they are all worthy contenders, so I will just go with what I am hoping for—Breaking Bad. For Comedy I have to go with Big Bang–there is still nothing funnier or smarter on tv these days. For Miniseries again I am torn. Luther is an outstanding series, but man-oh-man the new Sherlock is great. But I think the Hatfields may get the nod because Kevin is still so darn popular, and although it wasn't great, it wasn't bad.

Vying for your Attention

by Moe - 0 Comment(s)

There is so much good television- seriously good television- now on Sunday nights it is getting hard to know where to place your eyeballs. Which is why of course there are PVR's and other ways to watch new epsiodes at a time of your choosing. I myself have deliberatly avoided getting a PVR- not because I am a Luddite, but because I fear it I had one I would never again get anything else done. I have numerous friends who record everything and who are feeling so back-logged in their viewing that they are starting to suffer from completion anxiety.

Some of the shows currently vying for your attention are the following:

Mad Men Season 5- after a 17 month hiatus the multi emmy winning series is back with all of the cast continuing to behave very badly. But they do it with such intensity it is hard to resist. Catch up on the first 1 2 3 4 seasons and see what the fuss is all about.

Game of Thrones--- the highly anticipated second season of the hugely popular George RR Martin series started on HBO on April 1st. Catch up on the first season, but be prepared for a long wait on this one. We also have it as a Graphix Novel, The sound track from the first season, from our special collection in the talking book format, and of course all of the books. If you are going the book route, you have a lot of reading ahead of you. Start with Song of Ice and Fire, then Clash of Kings ,next a Storm of swords---and more and more and more.

Season 3 of the Good Wife: Deemed "THE BEST SHOW ON TV" by Entertainment Weekly, this smart legal drama stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Julianna Margulies. Watch 1 and 2---easy to get a hold of.

Emmys

This years event will be hosted by the very popular Jane Lynch from the very popular Glee. To see a complete list of all the categories and nominees, follow this link to Emmys official site.

You will be impressed with how many of the series, shows and specials CPL carries. In the running for outstanding drama are: Boardwalk Empire, The Good Wife, Mad Men, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, and Game of Thrones. For outstanding comedy; Glee, The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock and Modern Family. My money is on Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory.
