One of my favourite things about summer is the availability of locally grown vegetables and fruit. The local farmers markets make it easy to support our local producers while purchasing the freshest, best tasting fruits and vegetables possible.
While I have always frequented our local farmers markets, I have never signed up for a CSA delivery. CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes are weekly deliveries of produce from local farms. For the past two weeks, I've been picking up a friend's CSA box while she is away on holidays. CSA deliveries are not to your home: you must go pick them up from designated spots in Calgary. I felt a thrill and couldn't decide if it felt like Christmas or something a little more like stealing when I picked up my first CSA delivery from a line of bins in a nearby parking lot.
Most of what I got that first pickup is pictured here. A little bit of a bunch of favourite things (a good half of it was just eaten raw that very day).
Here's a list of CSAs in Calgary and if you're up for more of an adventure, you can visit farms to gather or pick your own produce. Check out the Alberta Farm Fresh Producers Association site for a directory of local producers.
