Alexander Calhoun became
Calgary Public Library's first chief librarian in 1911.
His career at Calgary Public Library spanned 34 years.
Dr. Calhoun was one of
the original directors of the Canadian Library Council
(now known as the Canadian Library Association), as well
as the first president of the Alberta Library
Association.
Dr. Calhoun's community
involvement included sitting on Calgary's first Planning
Commission, as well as serving as a commissioner after
retiring from Calgary Public Library. He was a founding
member of Calgary's Knights of the Round Table, served as
president of the Alberta Society of Artists, and was the
first president of the Allied Arts Council in Calgary.
Dr. Calhoun was awarded
an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of
Calgary.
