Louise Riley joined Calgary Public Library in 1930, developing the Children's Department of the Calgary Public Library, in addition to writing children's books, and storytelling at the library and on a weekly radio programme. She became Assistant Librarian in 1949.

She was awarded a Carnegie fellowship by the American Library Association, as well as winning the Book of the Year Medal by the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians in 1956 for her book "Train for Tiger Lily".

She served as chairman of the Alberta Library Board, held office in the Alberta Library Association, and was a councillor of the Canadian Library Association.
