Is it just me or have our long, lovely summer days made it easy to forget that September is just around the corner? I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but the cold hard truth is that Fall is coming - ready or not. But there's no need to panic! The Calgary Public Library Fall program guides are now available and are full of programs that are fun and informative for the whole family!

Take a look and let us know what programs you're most excited about! And then register for them!

At Village Square a lot of our programs open for registration on August 18th, 19th, and 20th. Don't miss out! Pop a reminder in your calendar or on your phone to register online, by phone (403-260-2620), or with us as early as 10am on those days!

At Village Square we're pretty excited to offer the following Fall programs... and many more!

Tween Book Club - Read some of the latest and greatest teen fiction and then come along for a chat about what you loved, liked, or didn't like at all. Part of the fun of reading is sharing your opinions about what you've read with others!

Story PALS - Do you like to read? Do you like dogs? Put these two together and you've got Story PALS - a chance for children to read aloud to faithful doggy companions who are sure to be all ears.

EEK! A Mouse! - Learn the absolute basics of computer use!

From ESL to Employment - For those with ESL level 6 or higher join us for an afternoon of helpful tips on growing your Canadian career.

And, of course, back by popular demand...

Drop In Family Story Time - the fun continues every Thursday morning from 10:30-11am in the Story Corner as we share stories, songs, and finger plays with parents and children.

Feature Fridays - join us every Friday from 1-2:30pm for interesting talks by fantastic speakers on a variety of topics including Making Traditional Teas, Cowtown to Chowtown, Creative Caregiving, and Discovering Mongolia. As always - we'll serve the coffee!

Bringing the Library to You

by Leanne - 1 Comment(s)

Did you know that libraries have a long history of venturing beyond their four walls to bring stories and books to people in their communities? Back in the 1930s a rural Illinois school teacher shared this insight about mobile libraries.

"you cannot measure the value of the bookmobile in dollars and cents, any more than you can measure the value of a new scientific discovery..." (you can find the full quote here).

The picture book Waiting for the BiblioBurro gives a brilliant introduction to the tradition of mobile libraries. In this story, Ana has memorized her one and only book and wishes she had more books to read but there is no library in her rural Columbian village. One day she wakes up to the clip - clop of hooves and discovers a traveling librarian has come to her village with many books to share. Not only does Ana receive a new book to read, but the traveling librarian encourages her to write stories of her own.

Here at Village Square we love bringing the library to our community. This summer we are bringing stories, crafts, songs, and stretches to Calgary Recreation Park & Play and Stay & Play events throughout the North East. If you're out at one of these events this summer please come by and say 'hi!' and join us for a story or two!

Thanks for Making the Prom Dress Extravaganza a Smashing Success!

by Jenna LaMarre - 0 Comment(s)

Village Square Library was buzzing this past Saturday, March 15th, as more than 40 brilliant young girls came out to find their perfect prom dress at Prom Dress Extravaganza.

Each girl received a small gift at the door and a ballot to win fantastic door prizes. After a brief introduction the library became a flurry of activity as girls tried on dresses, had their hair done by stylists from MC College, and had their dream dresses altered by our fantastic seamstress Marsina.

Many girls walked away with a gorgeous gown thanks to the generous donations from organizations like Ethos Bridal Group and individuals like Alice Tong. Alice brought in 4 gently used dresses in support of the program! We would like to thank all of our wonderful supporters who donated dresses, shoes, accessories, and prizes. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Village Square Library Celebrates Freedom to Read Week

Village Square Library Celebrates Freedom to Read Week February 23 – March 1, 2014

“Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” (www.freedomtoread.ca)

This past week we celebrated our right to freedom of expression and intellectual freedom here at Village Square Library.

To kick off the week our very own Sara House presented Mayor Naheed Nenshi with a copy of the Calgary Freedom to Read Week committee’s challenged book Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. This novel was challenged for its language, which was described by challengers as “vile profanity”, The novel was ultimately supported as a realistic depiction of teenage life.

In the library our Freedom to Read Week display showcased several challenged books such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Pick up one of these challenged books on your next visit and celebrate your freedom to read!

Zumba

On February 22nd, we offered Zumba at the Library! Julie (who does the family Zumba program) from the Village Square Leisure Centre instructed the participants on the basics. Zumba is a Latin based dance-exercise program that has become very popular in recent years. We had 30 participants from ages 10 to 69. Our participants loved getting in shape with us, and learning some new dance moves. One dancer was a line dancer normally, and brought a lot of his own flair to the group. Many asked our staff if we’d be offering it again, as they had so much fun.

CPO @ Village Square

CPO @ Village Square

The shelves were alive with the sound of music on February 10th at Village Square. Calgary Philharmonic violinists Lenora Leggatt and Lorna Tsai serenaded customers and staff as part of the CPO at Your Library program. The violinists were spontaneously accompanied by young listeners practicing their best ballet moves. Seeing these young dancers led one customer to comment that it was a moment he would “remember forever”.

If you enjoy classical music please watch for the next CPO at Your Library event at Village Square!
