Thanks for Making the Prom Dress Extravaganza a Smashing Success!

by Jenna LaMarre - 0 Comment(s)

Village Square Library was buzzing this past Saturday, March 15th, as more than 40 brilliant young girls came out to find their perfect prom dress at Prom Dress Extravaganza.

Each girl received a small gift at the door and a ballot to win fantastic door prizes. After a brief introduction the library became a flurry of activity as girls tried on dresses, had their hair done by stylists from MC College, and had their dream dresses altered by our fantastic seamstress Marsina.

Many girls walked away with a gorgeous gown thanks to the generous donations from organizations like Ethos Bridal Group and individuals like Alice Tong. Alice brought in 4 gently used dresses in support of the program! We would like to thank all of our wonderful supporters who donated dresses, shoes, accessories, and prizes. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Village Square Library Celebrates Freedom to Read Week

Village Square Library Celebrates Freedom to Read Week February 23 – March 1, 2014

“Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” (www.freedomtoread.ca)

This past week we celebrated our right to freedom of expression and intellectual freedom here at Village Square Library.

To kick off the week our very own Sara House presented Mayor Naheed Nenshi with a copy of the Calgary Freedom to Read Week committee’s challenged book Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. This novel was challenged for its language, which was described by challengers as “vile profanity”, The novel was ultimately supported as a realistic depiction of teenage life.

In the library our Freedom to Read Week display showcased several challenged books such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Pick up one of these challenged books on your next visit and celebrate your freedom to read!

Zumba at the Library

Zumba

On February 22nd, we offered Zumba at the Library! Julie (who does the family Zumba program) from the Village Square Leisure Centre instructed the participants on the basics. Zumba is a Latin based dance-exercise program that has become very popular in recent years. We had 30 participants from ages 10 to 69. Our participants loved getting in shape with us, and learning some new dance moves. One dancer was a line dancer normally, and brought a lot of his own flair to the group. Many asked our staff if we’d be offering it again, as they had so much fun.

CPO @ Village Square

CPO @ Village Square

The shelves were alive with the sound of music on February 10th at Village Square. Calgary Philharmonic violinists Lenora Leggatt and Lorna Tsai serenaded customers and staff as part of the CPO at Your Library program. The violinists were spontaneously accompanied by young listeners practicing their best ballet moves. Seeing these young dancers led one customer to comment that it was a moment he would “remember forever”.

If you enjoy classical music please watch for the next CPO at Your Library event at Village Square!

Village Square Library Now Has a Blog!

by Christine A - 0 Comment(s)

We'll use this blog to better communicate with Village Square Library customers about programs and issues affecting our branch.

For example:

Program Room #2 is open to the public as a quiet study space whenever it not otherwise in use. Agencies and Library staff also use this room for meetings and programs, leaving customers uncertain as to when the room will be available. This blog will list the times each week when our room is open to people wanting to study. Please call us or check this blog before coming to Village Square Library to ensure that the space is open to you.

We also offer a number of programs not listed in the September-December Program Guide. Why aren't they in the guide you ask? Well, sometimes the opportunity to have a guest speaker or entertainer arises only after the booklet is published. We don't want to deny our customers these free sessions, so we often post flyers around the branch. With this blog, we can now inform you of these great performances more effectively.
